Before the revolution started the British Government borrowed heavily from the British and Dutch Bankers to Finance the French and Indian war and their debt was 133 pounds. To pay for this the British put a sales tax on goods such as sugar, tobacco, salt, beer, sprits, tea, etc.
One of those taxes was the Stamp Tax. The stamp tax required colonist to buy stamps from royal collectors so the colonist could get a large variety of printed materials such as legal documents, playing cards, news papers, and land titles. The stamps had to be purchased in sterling silver, rather than paper currency. The stamp act hurt the colonial society and caused widespread resistance, it also unified forces among the colonies. Colonials delegates convened an inter colonial body the Stamp Act Congress, in December 1765. Because of this the colonies issued the Stamp Act Resolves, basically a set of rules for the stamp act.
The British taxation of goods in the American Colonies led to many Problems one of which we know as the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party started when Parliament tried to help the financially troubled East India Company by passing the Tea Act, granting the British monopoly over the the tea markets allowing direct sales to the colonies and the colonial merchants were cut out of the loop entirely. As a result the East India Company tea cost the least of any tea domestic or foreign. The colonist generally boycotted against the the British tea brands, turning to the contraband Dutch brews because they suspected that the British was attempting to bribe them into acknowledgement Parliament's right to tax the colonies. The Boston Tea Party occur ed on the night of December 16, Massachusetts Patriots dressed like the Mohawk Indians illegally boarded the Dartmouth, a cargo ship bearing 342 chests of East India tea valued at 10,000 pounds, and dumped the it into the Boston harbor.
To the British Government, the tea party was an act of lawlessness that deserved swift punishment. As a result in March 1774 the Parliament passed the Coercive Act more commonly known to the colonist as the Intolerable Act.The Port Bill Closed the port of Boston Until the payment was made on the tea.
The coercive act convinced the Americans that Britain was trying to take away their liberties. Congress vowed to stop trade with Britain until the acts were repealed. To enforce the boycott Congress set up the organization call "The Association". The Association Controlled what Americans could eat, drink, and wear, as well as how they behaved in public.
Soon after fighting broke out between the British and Americans near Boston, which had been occupied by a British army.Early in the year of 1775 Britain detached 700 British soldiers to destroy the supplies the colonist had collected. Finally in April 11, 1782, Congress declared the end of the Revolutionary War, which was basically a war due to unfair taxation.
